When College Feels Like Too Much: How Therapy Can Help

College is meant to feel exciting, meaningful, and empowering…so why does it sometimes feel like the opposite? With all of the rising academic and social pressures, it's getting increasingly difficult to achieve a dream college experience. This, when coupled with questions about identity, purpose, and the future, can make this part of your life feel especially overwhelming – that’s where therapy comes in.

Serena Garnett, LAC

"Working with college students always will have a special place in my heart since that was where I started practicing counseling with real people! When I worked at the Penn State Counseling Center with my amazing supervisor Dr. Stefanelli, I really understood deeper than ever the relationship between our emotions and relationships with others touches every single part of our lives. That clinical foundation and the students I worked with changed me forever and showed me how powerful therapy can be for changing lives, sometimes even within a semester or two! Adjunct teaching college psych courses showed me the other side of what my student-clients were facing in the classroom, so I feel pretty well rounded in terms of understanding the college experience- fun, stressful, dramatic, mind expanding, anxiety producing…"

Navigating Change and Uncertainty

This is a stage in which many students are learning how to adjust to new environments, build new support systems, and make decisions that can feel heavy and life altering. That’s a lot to navigate. Therapy offers a space to slow down, process, and move through all of these new changes with greater clarity and support.

Madison Bargetzi, LSW

"I love working with young adults because this time of life is full of change and new opportunities. I enjoy helping clients navigate the transition to adulthood, figure out next steps in school, work, or relationships, and build confidence along the way. It’s really rewarding to be part of their journey as they grow and find their path."

Daphne Mayer, LAC

"I really enjoy working with college-aged clients because it’s such a pivotal and transformative stage of life. Many young adults are navigating independence, identity development, relationships, and future goals all at once, which can feel both exciting and overwhelming. College often brings a new perspective on relationships with others and with oneself, as well as increased opportunities for self-discovery. There are many different paths they can take during this time, and while that can be exciting, it can also feel intimidating. That’s often when reaching out to someone for support can be especially beneficial. It’s meaningful to help clients navigate these transitions, build self-awareness, and gain confidence in making decisions that align with who they are and who they want to become. I also find it especially rewarding to witness their growth and how they learn to adapt and thrive during this stage of life."

Making Space for Self-Discovery

This generation of emerging adults are often deeply thoughtful and self aware, so it’s natural that some bigger questions begin to surface: Who am I? What do I want? Where am I going in life?  Without support, these questions can feel heavy or even paralyzing at times. In therapy, you gain a non-judgmental and pressure-free space to explore these thoughts and emotions in a way that feels grounding and productive.

Elisa Murphy, LSW

"I really enjoy working with college students, recent graduates, and young adults because there’s something so real and meaningful about this stage of life. It’s a time full of questions—about who you are, what you want, and where you’re going—so it’s such an important window to really get to know yourself and explore what feels true to you. This stage also holds so many transitions, possibilities and pressure all at once. I value being a space where people can slow down and sort through that without pressure to have it all figured out. I’m so impressed by how thoughtful and self-aware this generation is, even when they’re feeling overwhelmed or uncertain. Supporting them is critical because they’re navigating a complex, fast-paced and uncertain world, and it feels so important to help them build clarity, confidence, and a life that feels genuinely their own."

Building Confidence and Coping Skills

With academic pressures, social demands, and uncertainty about the future, it’s common for college students to begin struggling with their mental health. With the support of a therapist, individuals can develop practical tools to help manage anxiety, regulate emotions, and navigate life’s challenges with more ease. This can go a long way in building levels of confidence and resilience which extend far beyond college.

Izabella Garelick, PhD, LAC

"I love working with college students because it’s such a dynamic and transformative time. There’s so much growth, exploration, and figuring things out in real time. Young adults are often navigating new levels of independence, shifting relationships, and big questions about identity and purpose, and I enjoy helping them make sense of it all. It’s especially rewarding to support clients in finding healthy ways to cope while also tapping into creative outlets, whether that’s art, writing, music, or other passions, as a way to process emotions and stay grounded. There’s something really powerful about helping someone build both self-awareness and a life that feels authentic and fulfilling to them."

Strengthening Relationships & Connections

College is also a time which has the potential to shift how friendships evolve, family dynamics change, and new relationships begin to form. At times, this can lead one to feel confusion, disconnection, or even loneliness. Having a space to gain a better understanding of your relationship patterns and to learn how to communicate more openly can make all the difference in building more meaningful connections – within yourself and with others.

Esra Sahsuvaroglu, LAC

"Working with young adults is especially meaningful to me because it’s such a transformative stage of life. Many people in this age group tend to struggle with feeling stuck between who they’ve been and who they’re becoming, whether that’s in relationships, career paths, or their sense of identity. I really enjoy helping them put language to their internal experiences, especially when they feel like observers in their own lives or unsure how to connect more deeply with others. It’s rewarding to support them in building self-awareness, self-compassion, and the confidence to take up space more authentically. Having worked with clients navigating anxiety, life transitions, and questions of self-worth, I enjoy getting to witness those moments where things start to click, and they feel more grounded, empowered, and connected."

A Space to Grow Into Yourself

Above all else, therapy offers something that many college students don’t get elsewhere: an intentional space to pause, reflect, and be fully seen. That is what makes therapy so valuable at this stage. It’s not about having all the answers, but about learning how to ask the right questions, how to trust yourself, and to develop a stronger sense of who you are.

Christina Garcia, LSW

"I love working with college students because it’s such a unique and powerful stage of life. There’s so much growth happening all at once - figuring out identity, relationships, independence, and what comes next. I’m always struck by how open, insightful, and reflective this age group can be, even while navigating uncertainty. It’s an honor to support them as they make sense of their experiences, build confidence, and come into their own. I aim to create a space where they can slow down, feel understood, and explore themselves more deeply as they step into adulthood."
